Entrance to Practice Requirements (Alberta Applicants)
Applicant Requirements
I. Graduates of the MacEwan University 2 year program (or equivalent) in hearing aid dispensing
a. Application is initially made as a Student Member or Interim member of the College of Hearing Aid Practitioners of Alberta. Fee is $50.00. There is an additional $100.00 application fee.
b. The Applicant must provide proof of successful completion of the MacEwan University Hearing Aid Practitioner Program, or a 2- 3 year equivalent program approved by Council.
c. Application for full licensure must be completed within 3 years of completion of the educational program.
d. The applicant must provide two letters of reference attesting to good character and a statement as to whether the applicant has ever been convicted of a criminal offense.
*Please note that until fully licensed as a regulated member, students, Hearing Aid Practitioner program graduates, or other individuals working in a clinic may only work under direct supervision when practicing procedures on clients. Students may not perform hearing testing, fitting, ear impressions, otoscopy, real ear measurement or any other procedures on clients unless under the direct supervision of a qualified regulated member who has signed a declaration of supervision.
e. Upon graduation of the MacEwan College Program or equivalent, the CHAPA Theoretical exam must be passed with a minimum grade of 80%. (Cost is $200.00)
f. Upon graduation and after successful passing of the CHAPA Theoretical Exam the CHAPA Practical exam must be passed with a minimum grade of 80% (cost is $400.00)
g. The member may apply to be registered on the temporary register as a Hearing Aid Practitioner. The annual practice permit fee is $550.00. The fee to upgrade status from Student member may be pro-rated if the status change is to be made after Oct. 1 of the registration year. An individual on the temporary register may work under indirect supervision, (under the supervision of a member who is registered on the general register) until the successful completion of a certification exam approved by council. (This certification exam is currently the NBC-HIS exam. This exam must be taken and passed within 2 years of the individual being registered on the temporary register.
To maintain certification, a regulated member must
1) maintain 1500 working hours over 3 consecutive years
2) Partcipate in the CHAPA Continuing Competence Program on an ongoing basis.
3) Attain a minimum of 10 Continuing Education Units (CEU’s), a minimum 5 of which must be approved by the International Hearing Society.
